Introduction: The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of a Historic Institution
It was once one of Africa’s most prestigious maternity centres. But decades of neglect turned it into a struggling institution with poor infrastructure, demoralised staff, and unacceptable maternal outcomes.
When I assumed leadership, many believed the hospital’s decline was irreversible. But through systems redesign, teamwork, and disciplined governance, this iconic maternal centre was reborn – and maternal mortality dropped to near-zero within two years.
Diagnosing the Root Problem: A System in Collapse
The basement was flooded.
Drains were blocked.
Lifts were non-functional.
Clinical pathways were inconsistent.
Emergency response systems were weak.
Yet the biggest problem was not infrastructure. It was a system’s failure.
To revive this legacy maternal centre, we needed to repair not only the building, but the culture, processes, and governance.
The Leadership Strategy: Fix the System, Not the Symptom
- Immediate restoration of physical infrastructure
Clearing drains, reclaiming the basement, repairing lifts, and improving sanitation signalled renewal.
- Rebuilding clinical governance
We introduced clear protocols for obstetric emergencies, labour management, and neonatal care.
- Strengthening supervision and accountability
Daily monitoring created predictability.
- Motivating staff through inclusion
Every staff member became part of the transformation team.
- Establishing a patient-centred culture
Respect, communication, and empathy were reinforced daily.
The Results: Near-Zero Maternal Mortality
Within 24 months:
- Maternal mortality dropped to near-zero
- Patient confidence returned
- Staff morale surged
- The hospital regained its historical prestige
These results validated the MCC model and strengthened the case for specialised maternal centres across Nigeria.
One More Thing…
I often reflect on what I’ve learned along the way—about care, leadership, and systems that work. If any of this is useful, you’re welcome to follow along. I’ve documented most of what I share here in my book, Transforming: My Journey through the Lagos State Health System.
